Philosopher bum Johnny travels south to London to visit his ex-girlfriend, Louise. Maybe it's for the sex, maybe it's to profess his undying love, but his chances evaporate when he sleeps with Louise's flat mate, Sophie. Rather than face the music, he runs, like always, to the alienated streets of the city. Here he can pontificate on his theories of life to anyone who will listen.
Under Mike Leigh's direction, David Thewlis's depiction of Johnny is astounding. By turns hilarious and hateful, he turns the character into the ultimate anti-hero of our time, a complex mixture of cold, immortal cynicism and deeply passionate sympathy.
