1992, 113 minutes, Rated PG
Set in 1957 in a small Irish village, "The Playboys", starring Albert Finney, Aidan Quinn and Robin Wright, is an emotional story of a fiercely independant woman caught between the desires of two men in a world on the edge of change.
Tara Maguire (Robin Wright) is a strong-willed woman whose refusal to name the father of her illegimate son causes a scandal in the remote village in which she lives. Although her attitude creates heated gossip among the townsfolk, Tara, stubborn, fiesty and proud, ignores the smirks of disapproval. She even has the nerve to undertake smuggling runs over the Northern Island border to help make ends meet.
Fate intervenes with Tara when a travelling troupe of Irish actors called "The Playboys", led by actor/manager Freddie Fitzgerald (Milo O'Shea), arrives on its annual visit to "the last place God made". When Tom (Aidan Quinn), one of "The Playboys", comes calling, she pays little attention, determined not to let another man ruin her life. But Tom is persistent and Tara slowly warms to his attentions. Their budding romance, however, is repeatedly disrupted by the local police Sergeant Hegarty (Albert Finney), who has been pursuing Tara in a desperate effort to win her for himself.
Despite constant prodding from Father Malone (Alan Devlin) that she should submit to Hegarty's honourable intentions to care for both her and her son, Tara stands firm and begs Hegarty to leave her alone. When Tara chooses one of the men, the other jealously forces them into a situation that will change their lives forever.
