Labybird, ladybird inspired by a real event, is a love stroy as only Ken Loach could tell it.
Maggie has four children by four different fathers. All are taken into care by social services when she is deemed an 'unfit' mother. When she meets Jorge, a gentle Latin American refugee, she glimpses a chance of happiness, but finds it hard to break free from the tangle of social services bureaucracy.
This is a film that attempts a serious, compassionate look at the moral dilemmas behind social services and 'problem' families. Provocative, questioning and necessarily uncomfortable viewing. Loach has created a work with as much social impact as Cathy Come Home.
