William Hundert, (Kevin Kline- "Life as a House") the assistant Headmaster at the distinguished St. Benedict's School, is a fine teacher much admired by his peers and students alike. His special interest is Greek and Roman history and like the great leaders of those empires, Hundert believes his role is to do more that educate the pupil, but to positively mould his character
However, in the autumn of '72, Hundert finds his cloistered world of influence upended by the arrival of new student, Sedgwick Bell (Emile Hirsch), the son of prominent U.S. senator. Bell refuses to cooperate and at every opportunity breaks the rules and undermines Hundert's authority. This open defiance causes such conflict for Hundert, that he decides to tackle the problem in a totally unexpected way - with profound and life changing consequences for both the teacher and his rebellious student!
