In the Cro-Magnon age when homosapiens walked briefly with earlier species of man, a band of cave-dwelling Neanderthals adopt blond and blue-eyed Ayla, a child of what they term the "Others".

As she matures into a young woman of spirit and courage (unlike other women of the clan), her intelligence sets her apart from the rest and she must fight for survival against the jealous bigotry of Broud, who will one day be clan leader.
