Kim is happy go lucky urchin who finds his home in the streets and high roads of India in the 1890's. He lives by his wits but his kind heart has earned him the nickname "Friend of all the World".

There are two widely differing influences in his life from two contrasting personalities - Mahbub Ali, the tough worldly owner of a horse-train and a saintly old Buddhist.
