In 1939, Win Berry (Beau Bridges) a student at Harvard, has a summer job at Argbuthnot-by-the-Sea, an exclusive resort hotel on the coast of Maine. There he meets a young lady and he falls in love. After acquiring a pet bear and returning home from WWII, the Berry family begins it's life at Argbuthnot-by-the-Sea. An eccentric man, Freud (Wallace Shawn) returns to Argbuthnot-by-the-Sea and rebuilds the memories of the old hotel names Hotel New Hampshire. Events takeand unfortunate turn for the worse but the intertwined families survive together.
