England, 1699, the flamboyant Meneer Chrome (Ewan McGregor) is employed by wealthy landowner Thomas Smithers (pete Postlethwaite) to create a landscape design in celebration of his wife Juliana's (Greta Scacchi) beauty. However Julianna is bored with country isolation, and swiftly develops more than a passing fancy for the earnest young Chrome. However, Chrome seems to be more interested in Julianna's daughter, Thea (Carmen Chaplin). In a web of lust, jealousy and blackmail, the plans for the garden design become larger and more outrageous as competition for the beautiful women increases.
