Tommy Wilhelm (Robin Williams) is not only about to turn 40, he's experiencing a major mid-life crisis. He's unemployed, has no money, and feels used and unloved. He goes to New York to visit his father, but receives the cold shoulder, as his dad is very dissatisfied with what Tommy has (and hasn't) done with his life. Tommy gets some needed kindness from Doc, a practitioner who seems sympathetic towards him, but who actually has ulterior motives for his friendliness...
