When Shannon Griffin (Katherine Hiegl) and her family move to the idyllic town of Mountview to escape city pressure, urban stress becomes the least of their problems. After a local girl is attacked by a strange creature while swimming in the local lake, people begin turning up dead all over town - their bodies infested by a strange insect larvae. Soon the town is overwhelmed with mutant bugs and Shannon and her new boyfriend try to escape. But the National Guard has closed off the town and called in the last remaining hope; legendary Bugbuster General George (Randy Quaid), a former military General turned pest eliminator, who promises to 'kick bug ass'. With the help of the town Sheriff and a genetic scientist he must trace the rampaging bugs to their source and save the town from total annihilation.
