On a remote island a young scientist wades into the breakers and slaps the water. Within seconds a fin comes slicing through the foam and the huge, streamlined bulk of a Killer Whale comes to rest in the shadows a few metres away. The man and the whale stare at each other, both curious to know more.
This scientist's finding, together with other studies around the world, are building a new and fascinating portrait of one of the most feared and, until now, least understood of the ocean's creatures. This highly intelligent animal communicates using rich and eloquent volcabulary of sounds and is the most cunning hunter in the sea.
Killer Whales are found in every ocean of the world. In British columbia the killers catch salmon; in Norway the pods round up huge schools of herring; penguins and elephant seals are pursued in the sub-Antarctic and sea lion pups are picked off the beach in Argentina. Each of these hunting techniques is taught by the parents to their young - part of the rich tradition culture of whales.
