Jodie and her sister, Beth, live with their dreadful, domineering mother in the beautiful country town of Hay-on-Wye. Beth manages to have some fun, and even starts a tentative liaison with a handsome young male stripper called Bunny. But Jodie is well and truly trapped. One day she discovers a book on great British murderers - a book that changes her life and abruptly ends her mother's. Suddenly Jodie has a whole new set of friends; knowledgeable, inventive, experienced and absolutely dead. And the are all offering advice.
