2002, 103 minutes, Rated MA

Jane, (Frances McDormand) a legendary record producer whose shelves are lined with photographs of her with famous rock legends of the 1970's, is now in her early 40's and still going strong. She is currently recording a hot, young British band, whose lead singer Ian (Alessandro Nivola) is also sharing her bed.

Her son Sam (Christian Bale) is a medical student who has moved back to L.A. for a summer job at a hospital. With his gorgeous and perhapes naive fiancee Alex (Kate Beckinsale) in tow, he has arranged to live at the Laurel Canyon home, whilst Jane is to move to her Malibu retreat. With the recording running behind schedule, (a fact which Jane forgets to mention to Sam, until he and Alex are at the door step, clutching suitcases as tightly as they clench their jaws) they all end up sharing the sprawling house.

Raunchy, hilarious and strangely touching, Laurel Canyon is a psychological patchwork directed by Lisa Cholodenko (High Art) which attempts to tell the story of what goes on behind some of those Hollywood hills and walls, and how Jane, Sam, Alex and Ian come together and fall apart, individually and together...
