When an excommunicated priest dies under mysterious circumstances, his protegee, Alex Bernier (Heath Ledger), is sent to Rome to investigate. He soon discovers the 'Sin Eater', a mysterious beast that literally eats sins, may have had a hand in the death. Bernier launches an investigation that forces him to confront unimaginable evil in a dark underworld of bizarre heresy, ominous prophesies and demonic intrusions. There he gains the terrifying knowledge that there is a fate worse then death.
