Gil Scott-Heron - Black WaxIcon_movClass_E

1982, 89 minutes, Rated E

Black Wax is a film about music, about poetry, about black consciousness in America today. There are musicians whose work can't easily be encapsulated by the documentary film format, and there are others, like Gil Scott-Heron, who make a particularly keen impression this way.

The songs are interspersed between scenes of Mr Scott-Heron wandering through Washington discussing political ironies as he wanders past national monuments and then ghetto neighbourhoods. His nonchalant charm and his intelligence make this documentary capturing.

Robert Mugge, who adroitly directed this video, has also managed to catch his subject with easy comprehensiveness, and combined the musical and interview footage with talent. Songs like "Johannesburg", "Angel Dust", and "Gun" are deeply disturbing portraits of world politics powerfully produced for the concert stage.
