Hillie Radcliffe is moving from New York to Loz Angeles, with her constant companion, a small dog named Hambone. Boarding the plane, Hillie is unaware that a young girl, felling sorry for Hambone , howling miserably in his airline cage, has unlocked the door to comfort the dog.

Freed from his cage, Hambone arrives just in time to see Hillie's plane take off. Heartbroken, Hambone escapes into the street to begin his 3,300 mile trek to find Hillie.
