Determined to find a better life, Frances Lacey (Kathy Bates) hits the road from L.A. in 1962 with six quarrelling kids and a car that's ready to give up a lot sooner than she is. When the battered '48 Plymouth stops in front of a weathered wreck in an Idaho valley, her kids can scarcely believe this is the "perfect place" she promised them.
Less a house than the ruins of someone else's abandoned dream, it seems an unusual choice of homestead to the Asian landowner, Mr. Moon (Soon-Teck Oh), but Frances persuades him to let the Lacey family trade elbow grease for shelter, and the improbably dream begins to take shape.
The Lacey family becomes a growing part of Moon's life, and with his help the shack soon acquires walls, electricity, windows and outdoor plumbing. But Frances finds there's far more to building a home than putting up drywall when the tough task of fitting into the rural community of Hankston begins.
