10-year-old Devon Stockard is new to Camelot Gardens. Ignoring her parent's urging to befriend local girls her own age, Devon is drawn to Trent, the 22-year-old "lawn dog" who lives in an abandoned trailer in the woods and mows lawns for a living. Slowly an unlikely and fulfilling friendship is born between the two outsiders, but it is not long before Devon's parents notice the unacceptable focus of her affections. As tension mounts among the manicured lawns, College boys Sean and Brett take pleasure in wrecking Trent's mower and in unleashing their Doberman on him.
With his livelihood gone, Trent's control begins to crack. When he is finally cornered by the forces of suburbia, it is Devon who, calling on her memories of the Russian tale of a witch in the woods, finds a way of turning sickening violence into resolution, and summons up the power to free her friend.
