Felix Webb is a successful playwright with a new play in rehearsal. While his professional life is prospering, his personal life is in disarray - married and with three children, Felix has fallen passionately in love with a beautiful young feisty actress, Hilary.

The arrival of Robin Grange, a charismatic young Hollywood actor making his London theatre debut, only complicates things. Robin uncovers Felix's dilemma and sets upon weaving his web of mischief. Desperate to regain control of his life, Felix indulges in a grand theatrical gesture, but fate intervenes, and both Felix and Robin learn that real life doesn't always follow the script.
