September 1940 - Lily (Anna Friel) and her best friend Sophie (Julie Cox) fall madly in love with two handsome Canadian soldiers, Charlie (Aden Young) and Louie (Ben Weinberger) in war-torn London. Impressed by their romantic stories of Canada, the girls are swept off their feet by the boys' charms and soon find themselves married. Within a year, Lily, her newborn daughter and Sophie are on a boat travelling to Canada to meet thier new families, dreaming of idyllic life.

Lily's dreams are soon shattered by the reality of her new home. She is met with an icy reception from her bitter mother-in-law, Betty (Brenda Fricker) and crippled sister-in-law, Sylvia (Molly Parker) who have little use for Lily's "big city ways". And the dream ranch Charlie bragged about is nothing more than a dirt-farm with a tumbled-down tiny shack in the middle of nowhere.

Lily is saddened by the idea that she has left friends and the world she knew to be stuck in the Canadian praries with two strangers who don't want her around.

With time, Lily's unconditioned love for Charlie and spirited nature eventually captivate her in-laws, proving that strength of family and sense of community can overcome all hardships. Lily and Charlie realise that although things did not turn out as they hoped for, true love and family has bound them together. Put to the test, their faith in each other will allow them to live out their dreams.
