Across the rolling farmlands of teh Pennsylvania Dutch country, a 16-year-old boy races home through the mist. His life is simple, the world around him safe.
Then, one day, he meets a backwoods faith healer, and the boy is slowly dragged deep into events far more terrifying than any he could have ever imagined.
Sutherland, who has starred in such hits as "Ordinary People", "M*A*S*H" and "Clute", is Dr. John Reese, a strange traveling preacher who enters Billy Kelly's life with claims of carrying the Lord's gift. When Billy (played by Lowe in his motion picture debut) becomes drawn to Reese's mystical charms, the healer agrees to take the boy under his wing, and helps - in his own way - to educate him.
At the same time, Billy also begins to see more of Alice Spangler, and their tentative relationship soon becomes a growing romance. Alice (played by Mia Sara), desperately wants more from life than just this small village, and makes plns to leave with Billy.
In the midst of this, on one of the local farms, the farm animals begin to die. And no one can explain it. Soon a young girl also takes ill and dies mysteriously.
