Sally Goodman has spent seventeen years caring for her brain damaged son, David. He was needy, and she learned to meet those needs. She was the only one who could.

Unfortunately, with everything done for him, David learned to do very little for himself.

When he learns hwo to program a VCR, it becomes clear that he can learn more if she will let him attend school. But does she have the courage to do it?
