An honest cop, Billy Benson, enters the dark world of murder and corruption when his ex-partner is killed by a small-time mobster, Sally Fish.

Karen Winterman, a brilliant, young psychotherapist in a world where insanity seems like the best strategy, is good at analysing everyone but herself. Edmund, the son of famous jazz musician who died broke and forgotten, is a loner who plays LPs in a dark room and waits for the end, but, In the meantine, he's a coldly efficient killer. The four come together when Benson's partner is caught up in Sally Fish's drug operation, and Karen Winterman begins an affair with a patient, a young hustler, who also works for Sally Fish.

When Sally decides to "clean house" she hires Edmund to kill Benson's partner and he and his Asian girlfriend kill Karen's lover. Karen is an inadvertant witness to the murder. It's a lethal merry-go-round, turning faster and faster. It's a game with one simple rule: the first one to die loses.
