It's Newcastle England, and Kate (Melanie Griffith) works for ruthless American Gangster/Real Estate Magnate Cosmo (Tommy Lee Jones), arrives in Newcastle intent on buying up The Waterfront District for redevelopment. However, one property still eludes him - The Key Club owned by the tough and prosperous Finney (Sting).

When Brendan (Sean Bean), a new employee at the club meets Kate, Cosmo's former mistress, they begin an intense and passionate affair. The lovers soon get caught up in the fierce battle between Finney and Cosmo.
