In the 1970s, Dickie Roberts (David Spade) was a child star in a hit TV series. Now Dickie is nothing more than a washed up wannabe who is keen to ditch his job as a valet attendant in a Hollywood restaurant and revives his acting career. He auditions for a role in Rob Reiner's new movie but the director doesn't believe Dickie is normal enough to play the part, so in a bid to become normal and score the role, Dickie hires a "typical" family to give him the real-life upbringing he never had. However, when he moves in, the family's life becomes anything but normal but in the mean time Dickie learns some valuable lessons about fame, fortune and family values.
