Fiona Coneelly (Jeni Courtney) is sent to live with her grandparents Hugh (Mick Lally) and Tess (Eileen Colgan) on the West Coast of Ireland and through her new bedroom window see the distant island of Roan Inish.

She soon learns of the learns the legend of the "Selkie". Generations ago, an ancestor of Fiona's took for his wife a beautiful creature who was half woman, half seal. He captured her by stealing her sealskin. The two had many children, all raised in a special cradle made from the wood of shipwrecks and festooned with sea shells. However, one day the woman found her sealskin and left. Since then the cradle has been handed down from family to family until Jamie, Fiona's brother mysteriously sailed away in it and was never seen again... until Riona takes a trip to the island of Roan Inish.
