Caesar has been assassinated. A young man, shy but iron-willed, claims to be Caesar's heir and successor to the Roman Empire. Four centuries of history will carry his name.
In 42 BC, Rome is in the middle of a civil war. Together with his friend Agrippa, the young Augustus (Peter O'Toole) goes to Spain in order to help Julius Caesar. His loyalty to the Emperor earns him a glorious future: when Caesar is murdered by the traitorous Brutus, Augustus ascends his throne. His reign would be a time of peace and prosperity, but first Augustus must fight a bloody war against his enemies. In an epic tale of political intrigue, heroism and villany, and in the intimate story of his love for one woman, Augustus reveals both the legend and the man.
