Set in Belgium in the early 70's, Left Luggage is the emotional story of Chaja (Laura Fraser), a rebellious philosophy student struggling to come of age. Her relationship with her parents, both concentration camp survivors, is strained as she finds herself struggling to connect with her Jewish heritage.

When a family friend fins her a job as a nanny for a Hassidic family with 5 children, Chaja quickly discovers her liberal attitudes conflict with the strict rules and traditions of the family, but hoping to understand her own parents better she remains, befriending Mrs. Kalman (Isabella Rossellini) and forming a special bond with Simcha, the youngest of the children.

Despite the mine field of customs and prejusice she encounters, Chaja's love for young Simcha blossoms, allowing her to discovers a new appreciation of her own identity until a tragic accident shatters both their lives and devastates Chaja's new found peace.
