La Belle Noiseuse tells the story of an artist (Michael Piccoli in one of his most acclaimed roles) who ten years perviously, abandoned his greatest masterpiece titled 'La Belle Noiseuse' (The Beautiful Troublemaker), a painting of his wife (played by Jane Birkin). His inspiration is rekindled when he encounters the beautiful and fascinating Marianne (Emmanuel Beart of Natalie, 8 Femmes and the upcoming story of Marie & Julien) and he is inspired to return the unfinished canvas, using her as his new model. As the new work begins, disturbing tensions begin to develop and the reasons for the paintings original rejection begin to surface.
