Horror maestro Bario Argento's (Demons, Phenomena, Tenebrae) gory remake of th eGaston Leroux classic is a haunting, macabre and tragic story of a tortured man's love for a beautiful singer.
In Argento's arthouse horror twist on the original theme, the phantom is not disfigured but is raised by telepathic rats deep under the Paris Opera House. Having falled for up-and-comign diva Christine, the monstrous and romantic Phantom employs his unearthly organ melodies to lure her, and sundry unwilling victims, into his dark, subterranean world with the expected fatal results.
Screenwriting credits go to Gerard Brach, best known for collaborations with Roman Polanski on films such as Repulsion and The Fearless Vampire Killers, while the eerie score is provided by soundtrack master, Ennio Morricone (The Untouchables, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly).
Argeno's trademark graphic gore is fully realized in this previously unrated director's cut.
