Internationally renowned author, Primo Levi (John Turturro) was one of the few to walk out of World War II's most despicable concentration camps - Auschwitz.

For nine months after his liberation, while still in a state of shock, Levi traced his way home, through Poland, the Ukraine and finally to Italy. What confronted him was a landscape of desolation and destruction.

But out of the ashes of the past, Levi sensed a new age of discovery and rebirth awaited.
