International filmmaker Hector Babenco (who's 1985 hit Kiss Of The Spider Woman also took us behind bars) captures the tragedy of history's deadliest prison riot in his harrowing new film that was nominated for the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Shocking in its brutality but also a profoundly moving story of hope and survival, Carandiru is a masterwork from a master direcotr - an event that will leave you shaken, long after the credits have rolled.
