An insightful dramatic comedy by award winning director Alan Rudolph (Afterglow, Mrs Parker and the Vicious Circle) who employs this dental observation as a powerful metaphor for the complexities of marriage and human relationships.
Dr. Dave Hurst (Campbell Scott) shares a private clinical practice with is attractive wife Dr. Dana (Hope Davis) in a 'dream life' with their three beautiful children. Dave believes he witnesses his wife in an intimate exchange with another man whilst she is performing in an opera. True to his emotionally repressed nature, his jealousy rages and his alter ago personifies in the form of his most difficult patient, Slater (Denis Leary).
A hard living musician with a toothache, Slater becomes the running commentary on Dave's personal conversations, churning up the dentist's deepest insecurities and pushing Dave to the edge. All of this culminates in a hilarious yet harrowing week when the family succumbs to a raging flu.
