With the world at war and the Nazis nearing the outskirts of Paris, Dr. Ravic (Anthony Hopkins) has managed to escape the confinement of a concentration camp. He encounters Joan (Lesley-Anne Down), a woman who is ready to abandon her last hopes of ever attaining happiness, Dr. Ravic, unable to escape the horrors of his past, has become obsessed with carrying out a vengeful plot against the SS officer who previously made his life unbearable.
