1986, 120 minutes, Rated E

Just as the previous year had seen the curtain painfully drawn on Leigh Matthew's career, Bruce Doull's distinguished service on Carlton's backline was given a sour send off by a Hawthorn side determined to overcome the previous season's Grand Final nightmare.

Right from the outset it was obvious that Hawthorn was prepared to go further than the Blues in its pursuit of victory. It hunted in numbers, hit packs ferociously and unearthed a young full-forward by the name of Jason Dunstall.

It was this chubby kid from Queensland who did the damage on Doull - the brilliant Blue couldn't match Dunstall's pace and by the end of the day the champion defender had conceded six goals.

Any hope of a Carlton comeback was crushed by the relentless Hawks in the third term and by the end of the final quarter it had become a procession - players from both sides awaited the final siren, Carlton to lick its wounds, Hawthorn to celebrate another crushing Grand Final success.
