Bobby Platt (Christian Bale) is a sweet natured, mentally challenged 24 year-old who has spent his entire life at the mercy of an abusive step-father (Daniel Benzali) he calls 'The Fat'. His only comfort in life is his pet mouse Peter and the protective love of his mother.
However when Bobby's mother tragically dies, he is left as heir to the family business, a business his cruel step-father is determined to control. Terrified of 'The Fat' threats to have him committed Bobby flees the only home he has ever known, and enteres a world he knows nothing of
Travelling alone and frightened Bobby meets the gruff recluse Mr Summers (John Hurt), whose life's work is to bury the animals he finds by the side of the road. Inrigued with Bobby's simple nature and love of animals Mr Summers begins to teach Bobby the intricacies of his 'work'.
But when Bobby eventually decides to return to London and confron 'The Fat', he quickly discovers that the treacherous nature of greeed and money runs far deeper than he ever imagined.
