Considered to be Bergman's best and most intimate of his work, Fanny & Alexander is also his most awarded, including Academy Awards for best Foregin Language Film, Bset Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
A swansong to childhood and the magic of youth, this is the story of one year in the life of a large and wealthy theatrical family living in a Swedish provincial town at the turn of the century. Fanny and Alexander are two young children whose lives are turned upside down when their father dies suddenly, and their Mother, Emilie, falls for the icy charms of the puritanical local bishop. Much to the dismay of their grandmother the children are mistreated under the bishop's strict regime, even their mother is powerless to act. But to the children's rescue comes an old family friend, Isak, a man who harbors weird and wonderful supernatural powers that offer the children a means of escape and may well see the family united yet again.
Bergman said of his monumental work, " Fanny & Alexander is the sum total of my life as a filmmaker." It is also his most autobigraphical, Alexander a mirror for the director himself, who also had a problematic relationship with his own Father, a strict clergyman. Presented for the first time on DVD in the original three hour theatrical version, with a pristine new transfer, Fanny And Alexander is Bergman's masterpiece.
