A Thousand Skies celebrates the life and times of the legendary Australian aviator Charles Kingsford Smith, know to millions of adoring fans as "Smithy".
A decorated fighter pilot in the Great War, he flew stunts in Hollywood then signed up with one of Australia's first airlines, flying primitive biplanes over the vast Australian outback.
An attempt on the Australia-England flight record ended with a forced landing in the desert. It nearly cost him and his crew their lives, but his dream of being the first to conquer the might Pacific kept him going.
Smithy displayed all the contradictory qualities for which Australians are famous. He was gusty, stubborn, visionary, and the best in the world at what he did. Knighted for his achievements, he shunned the adulation of the crowd and preferred a beer with his mates to the bright lights.
Smithy risked death a thousand times in a thousand skies to achieve his dream - to fly his beloved "Southern Cross" to the other side of the world and back. His superhuman flying skills and record breaking flights are exquisitely captured in this superb high budget Australian drama, originally produced for network broadcast in the golden age of television miniseries.
