In 19th century Belgium, Nello, a young orphan, is being raised by his poor but loving grandfather. Little Nello dreams of becoming a great artist like the town's most famous son, Peter Paul Rubens. One day, Nello and his grandfather discover a dying dog lying by the side of the road. Despite their abject poverty, they take the dog home and nurse it back to health. As the dog regains his strength and spirit, Nello, it turn, begins to realise his dream when a well-known artist sees his drawings and is impressed. At last, Nello can throw off the shackles of the past and let his spirit soar.., and the mysterious presence of his dog seems somehow linked to his change of fortunes. Filmed against the hauntingly stark landscape of Flanders, this lush production evocatively captures the innocence of childhood and the sometimes brutal path to adulthood.
