Marcus Clarke's epic novel about Australia's colonial penal system is one of the great classics of Australian literature. Originally written for a journal as monthly episodes between 1870 and 1872, Clarke later revised his tale, changing the storyline dramatically and finally publishing the novel "For The Term Of His Natural Life" in 1874.
Richard Devine, on discover the secret of his true parentage, is disinherited and driven from his home in England. After changing his name to Rufus Dawes, he is then falsely accused of murdering his real father and transported to the notorious Port Arthur penal colony in Van Diemen's Land "for the term of his natural life".
The bright and witty young Englishman is gradually transformed to a hardened and desperate convict suffering cruel and violent treatment by his gaolers including the brutal Lieutenant Frere.
