Norman Puckle (Norman Wisdom) is in despair: his love for a haughty cinema attendant has been spurned. After trying to commit suicide, he is rescued and persuaded to join the navy. There he continuously causes havoc, until he is hand-picked by the Admiral as the first man to be sent into space aboard their new craft. But why has the Admiral selected an apparently bungling idiot, and, more importantly, how on earth will Norman cope?.
