1995, 107 minutes, Rated R
Leaving Las Vegas is a love story like no other, a harrowing tale of self destruction. There is no future for its unconventional central characters, an alcoholic screenwriter named Ben (Nicolas Cage) and a Vegas hooker named Sera (Elisabeth Shue). But they have a now that is compelling and heartbreaking. Ben picks up Sera on the Strip and takes her to a motel. Given his state of inebriation, sex is not an option. They drink, pass outt and several encounters later, move in together. There are two conditions - Sera can never ask Ben to stop drinking. He can never ask her to stop working the Strip. The risky and honest performances of Cage and Shue are both tough and tender and their raw physicality is astonishing.
