In the coalfields of West Virginia in the 1920s, backwoods miners formed an uneasy alliance with a union organiser (Chris Cooper from 'Adaptation') in a strike against crippling conditions and pay.

The miners battled scabs, spies and murderous thugs to enable the birth of the union movement in Virginia.

James Earl Jones ('A Clear and Present Danger') heads a supberb cast in this moving, exciting story of one of freedom's forgotten battles.

Matewan is a triumph of both American film making and of the human spirit.
