A New Zealand journalist, Christina, and her American friend Lane travel to Rotorua, site of the country's famous hot springs, to interview a writer. When Lane gets behind the wheel she crashes the car, severely injuring Christina. Lane ventures on to keep the appointment with the writer, which Christina is hospitalized with brain damage and vocal chord and leg injuries. Upon arriving in Rotorua, Lane first takes up with the writer's teenage daughter Angela before starting an affair with him. Angered, Angela befriends Christina in the hospital, and when Christina is released, she goes to Rotorus to find Lane and the writer. There the four characters meet and the film comes to a disturbing and vengeful climax.
