Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert De Niro) is feared both for his temper and his skill with the sword, and in a bitter fight over a woman, he kills his brother Felipe (Aidan Quinn). But anger becomes remorse and to atone for his sin, Mendoza turns to the Church, journeying into the jungle to join a Jesuit mission run by the devout, idealistic priest, Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons).
Together they work to help care for the persecuted local Indian tribe. Unknown to them, far from their small jungle settlement, a new treaty is signed between Portugal and Spain that sounds the death knell of the Jesuit missions. Suddenly Gabrial and Mendoza find themselves fighting those sent to supress them - the one armed with the peaceful love of God, the other with the sword...
