Set in 1660's at a time when women's roles in theatre were played by men, Edward 'Ned' celebrated leading lady, usind his beauty and skill to make great female roles his own. But when Charles II (Rupert Everett) is tired of seeing the same old performaners, the ruler allows real women to tread the boards and men are forbidden from playing women's parts. Virtually overnight Ned becomes a complete nobody and seems headed for despair until his ex-dresser turned actress Maria (Claire Daines) takes it on herself to make a man of him again.
