Despite his success as a fund raiser and media manager for the Church, Father Daniel Clemens (Christian Slater) has lost the conviction which made him join the priesthood.

When Father Andrews, a young priest with a tough downtown parish, is charged with murder, Daniel's job is to deflect scandal. Hiw growing belief in the accused's innocence is confirmed when the young priest is jailed for murder and the unthinkable happens.

To the consternation of his friend and mentor Jenry McCaran (Stephen Rea), Daniel takes over the imprisoned priest's parish and plunges into a seamy world far away from his own comfortable living. With the aid of Madeline Kinney (Molly Parker), an investigative TV reporter who had been his girlfriend before his calling, Daniel heads down a path which will lead to further deaths but which might just take him back to his own true course.
