Vera Drake (Imelda Staunton) lives with her husband Stan (Phil Davis) and their two adult children, Sid and Ethel (Daniel Mays and Alex Kelly). Vera lives an altruistic life. After work each day she spends her time nursing her mother and ill neighbours and taking in suppertime strays. Unbeknownst to her family, Vera also helps girls who "find themselves in trouble".
Writer-Director Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Topsy Turvy) returns to the screen with the Venice Golden Lion winning story of Vera Drake, an affecting drama which examines social attitudes to abortion in post-war London.
