The police are chasing blackmail victim Jack Barrett, a wages clerk who has stolen a lot of money from his employer. Scared and on the run, he is trying desperately to get in touch with Melville Farr, a prosperous young barrister, but is apprehended by the police and commits suicide in his cell. Melville hears of this, and realises that the young boy was trying to save Melville's reputation. Someone is in possession of information about their homosexual relationship which Barrett was trying to prevent being made public. With his loyal companion dead and wife demanding answers, he must think and act fast.
