Freshly discharged from the army and on his way to a better future, Sonny (James Franco) stops by his home in New Orleans and visits the bordello run by his mother, where he previously worked as a gigolo.
Jewel (Brenda Blethyn), domineering, tough and painfully in need of her son's love and labour, runs a whorehouse in the French Quarter. Her looks have faded, but her will to survive has not.
Her prized new attraction is Carol (Mena Suvari), a pretty and fresh young hooker who fetches good money, but who's looking to get out of the life. Carol takes an immediate interest in handsome Sonny and begs him to take her away. Despite Jewel's pleadings, Sonny wants to leave the town and the trade.
He wants to make something of himself. He wants to be free.
